The 80s on the dance floor: what still works

2 min read

The 80s are the safest decade at a mixed celebration. The music is old enough for the parents to go with it, and so present through films and playlists that twenty-year-olds know every chorus. Not all of it works equally well, though.

Why the 80s are so dependable

No other decade produced so many songs you recognise within three notes. Synth hooks, clear choruses, tempos between 110 and 130 – exactly the range where people who do not usually dance will still dance.

There is a second effect worth noting: 80s music makes nobody feel silly. It functions as shared cultural property rather than a matter of taste.

German 80s: Neue Deutsche Welle

If a good part of your guest list is German, this block works better than most international couples expect – particularly with guests between forty and sixty. It is worth including even if the lyrics mean nothing to you.

Handle these with care

Not every 80s classic fills a floor. Long ballads and sprawling rock numbers sound better in memory than they feel at midnight. Pure Italo-disco blocks are risky too: they reach part of the room strongly and the rest not at all.

Rule of thumb: at most three 80s tracks in a row, then something newer in between.
