Planning a winter wedding: a running order built around daylight, music and mood

You do not plan a winter wedding like a summer wedding with a thicker coat. A day in December in Ostwestfalen is almost nine hours shorter than one in June, and anything meant to happen outside has to be done by four. Build that in from the start and you get a day that seems to run by itself. This guide goes through it step by step.
The running order follows the daylight
In summer the ceremony often starts in the afternoon because it stays light until ten anyway. In winter everything moves forward. The times below are for a day in December or January – in November and March you have close to an hour more.
- 12:00 – Ceremony, civil or celebrant-led
- 13:00 – Drinks reception and congratulations, indoors and warm
- 14:00 – Couple photos outside while the light is soft
- 15:30 – Coffee and cake, the guests settle in
- 16:00 – Sunset: lights on, candles lit, the room changes
- 18:30 – Dinner, then speeches and games in one block
- 21:00 – First dance, the party begins
Couple photos go before the cake, not after it. Once the cake is done it is already getting dark, and there is hardly any light left for pictures outside.
Reception: a warm arrival
In summer guests drift into the garden after the ceremony. In winter they all come through the same door at once, with coats, scarves and cold hands. A few things make that moment easy:
- A cloakroom with enough space and someone keeping an eye on it
- Hot drinks next to the sparkling wine – mulled wine, punch, alcohol-free too
- Music from the first minute, so the room is not silent while everyone arrives
- Blankets or a fire pit for anyone stepping outside for a few minutes
- A lit path from the car park to the door

Because it gets dark early, lighting carries the whole evening in winter – at dinner just as much as on the dance floor. House lights alone rarely manage it: they are either too bright for the mood or too dark for the photos.
What works well is a mix of warm base light in the room, ambient lighting on walls and pillars, and dedicated dance-floor lighting that only really comes on with the party. A mirror ball over the first dance has even more effect in winter, because nothing is shining in from outside.
Agree with your DJ beforehand which lighting runs when. Dimmed and warm for dinner, the first effect for the first dance – that way the guests notice something new is starting.
Music with a winter feel
A winter wedding does not need a Christmas playlist. There are plenty of songs that sound like snow, cold air and a warm room without anyone thinking of presents. These work for the reception, the first dance or later on the dance floor:

Winter wedding checklist
- Agree with the venue when the room will be warm and ready for guests
- Schedule the ceremony so there is an hour of daylight left for photos afterwards
- Tell guests travelling far about weather and road conditions, and reserve rooms nearby
- Choose the dress and suit with the walk outside in mind – a wrap, a coat, sturdy shoes for the photos

- Plan the evening lighting with your DJ in advance, not on the day
